[Kaoru, Megumi and Misao watch from the living room as "the
menfolk" -- Kenshin, Sano, and Aoshi -- attempt to prepare dinner. Kenshin is
doing the cooking, while Sano alternates between eyeing the biggest of the fish
and trying to persuade the rurouni to go gambling after the meal; Aoshi watches
it all in stoic silence -- present . . . but not really participating.
Kaoru props her elbow on the table, cupping her chin in her hand as the music
starts.]
|
|
Kaoru (abruptly): |
Am I dreamin'? |
Megumi (likewise, on the opposite side of the table): |
Or stupid? |
Misao (dreamily, chin resting in her cupped palms, both
elbows on the table): |
I think I've been hit by Cupid... |
All three (looking sheepishly at each other): |
But no one needs to know right now |
|
Megumi (girlishly eager to share now that the secret's out): |
I met a tall, dark and handsome man
And I've been busy makin' big plans |
Kaoru and Misao (smiling tolerant smiles, as if they don't
understand what she sees in Sano): |
But no one needs to know right now |
|
Kaoru (looking longingly at Kenshin): |
I got my heart set, |
Misao (similarly, at Aoshi): |
My feet wet, |
All three (shaking their heads at the men's ignorance, their
expressions despondent): |
And he don't even know it yet -
But no one needs to know right now. |
|
Kaoru (sitting up determinedly as she turns to face the other
two women): |
I'll tell him someday, |
Megumi (also straightening): |
Some way, |
Misao (likewise): |
Somehow. |
All three (lowering their voices as the men turn to look at
them): |
But I'm gonna keep it a secret for now. |
|
They pause and smile innocently at the men, who shrug --
losing interest -- and look away. |
|
Kaoru (confidingly, to Megumi and Misao): |
I want bells to ring, |
Megumi (nodding agreement): |
A choir to sing, |
Misao (rising onto her knees and leaning forward
enthusiastically, ending with her hands on her hips and an
emphatic nod): |
The white dress, the guests, the cake, the car
-- the whole darn thing! |
Kaoru and Megumi (laughing slightly as Misao subsides,
blushing to realize the men are looking at them again): |
But no one needs to know right now |
|
Together, as if to gain confidence: |
I'll tell him someday, someway, somehow. |
Huddling close, voices lowering almost to a whisper: |
But I'm gonna keep it a secret for now. |
|
Kaoru (holding up her imaginary daughter -- a dark-haired
sprite with violet eyes): |
We'll have a little girl, |
Megumi (holding up her imaginary son -- a spike-haired
clever-looking child): |
A little boy, |
Misao (holding up her imaginary pet): |
A little Benji we call Leroy |
Kaoru and Megumi (each covering their eyes with one hand
as they wave Misao away with the other, their shoulders shaking with
suppressed laughter): |
But no one needs to know right now. |
|
Misao (protesting their rejection of her fantasy-family): |
And I'm not lonely anymore at night. |
Kaoru and Megumi (sadly, their chins sinking back onto
their hands): |
And he don't know only only he can make it right. |
|
[Musical interlude. The men gather up the cooking
apparatus and head for the kitchen.] |
|
Kaoru, Megumi and Misao (watching appreciatively as the
men walk by): |
And I'm not lonely anymore at night. |
Misao (nudging Kaoru teasingly in the side as the older girl
watches Kenshin a little too appreciatively): |
And he don't know only only he can make it right. |
|
Kaoru (blushing at Misao's teasing): |
I'm not dreamin' |
Megumi (fox ears apparent, laughing slightly): |
Or stupid |
All three (in complete agreement): |
But boy have I been hit by Cupid! |
|
Kaoru (shaking an admonishing finger at the other two as
she rises to her feet): |
And no one needs to know right now. |
Misao and Megumi (holding hands up as if to say, "Who,
me? Tell him?"): |
No one, no one. |
Megumi (taking her turn to extract a promise, also rising to
her feet): |
No one needs to know right now. |
Kaoru and Misao (nodding emphatic agreement): |
No one, no one. |
Misao (sighing wistfully as she follows the other two toward
the kitchen): |
No one needs to know right now. |
